# What Are Custom Attributes?
## Custom Attributes are dynamic placeholders that allow organizations to personalize digital certificates, badges, verification pages, and email communications at scale.
Instead of manually creating individual assets for every recipient, Custom Attributes automate the population of unique, recipient-specific details across an entire issuing campaign.
### Understanding Attribute Types
Custom Attributes support several data types to accommodate different credential details and visual assets:
- **Text:** Populates individual textual details such as recipient names, job titles, departments, or custom award titles.
- **Date:** Displays time-based information, including issue dates, course completion dates, or credential expiration dates.
- **Number:** Renders numeric data such as candidate IDs, test scores, completed credit hours, or unique serial numbers.
- **Image:** Inserts dynamic visual assets unique to each recipient, such as profile photos, partner or co-branding logos, and authorized signatures.
### How Custom Attributes Work
The custom attribute workflow links component design templates with recipient datasets:
1. **Definition:** Attributes are created within component editors—such as **Credential Designs**, **Credential Details**, or **Email Templates**—and assigned a designated type (*Text*, *Date*, *Number*, or *Image*).
2. **Placement:** Attribute placeholders are placed on the visual canvas or email layout, where their position, sizing, alignment, and formatting are configured.
3. **Data Mapping:** During campaign setup, recipient information is uploaded via CSV/Excel or entered individually. Each data column is mapped to its corresponding Custom Attribute field.
4. **Automated Rendering:** Upon issuance, the platform dynamically replaces each placeholder with the matched data, generating individualized credentials and notification emails automatically.

### Key Applications for Image Attributes
While text and numeric attributes handle standard credential details, **Image Attributes** enable advanced visual customization:
- **Recipient Headshots:** Render official profile photos directly onto digital ID cards, certificates, or badges.
- **Partner & Sponsor Logos:** Display localized or organization-specific co-branding logos based on the recipient's affiliation.
- **Authorized Signatures:** Automatically insert corresponding executive or instructor signatures depending on course track or department.
Custom Attributes transform static designs into dynamic, scalable templates. By defining text, date, number, and image placeholders across credential components, organizations can issue highly tailored digital credentials efficiently without manual design overhead.
